Milestones in Indian Mint Cultivation


1964 First roots planted in Bilaspur, district Rampur of Uttar Pradesh, India

1966 Green revolution, More and more farmers started to adopt the new
wonder crop. American MNC built-up large mint crop distillation facility
at Bilaspur.

1969 Cultivation Started in Sambhal and Moradabad of Uttar Pradesh.

1970Mentha & Allied Products Ltd. starts mint crop distillation facility in
Sambhal.

1971 Small distillation plants start operations in Chandausi.

1973 More and more small distillation plants start operations in Rampur,
Sambhal & Bareilly.

Started initial involvement with manufacturing of Menthol & Peppermint oils.

1987 India becomes a major exporter of Menthol of Worl Menthol Market.

1990 Lucknow and Barabanki areas started cultivation.

1991 Sitapur and Bahrich areas started culitvation.

1992 Gorakhpur and Azampur areas started cultivation.

1993 Fatehpur started cultivation.


Future Developments

It is important to note that Mint had never undergone so much of R&D at field level as India had done during the past 15 yrs. and looking to on-going R&D Projects, It will be difficult for Mint to leave India at least for next 50 yrs. The R&D Projects at India's Premium institute CIMAP (Central Institute Of Medicinal & A Romatic Plant), with a close association with t he trade & commerce, several of high yield varieties have already been developed. The Famous varieties are mas-1 , whic was a variety of higher Menthol level. The current variety Shivalik and Kosi are doing very well at both Traditional and Non-traditional Mind growing area. 1. Saksham : The Saksham Has Made Available to farmers in 2003 for furthur multipication expected to have commercialisation by 2003.

2. Kushal : The Kushal Has Made Available to farmers in 2003 for furthur multipication expected to have commercialisation by 2003.

3. Sambhav : Still in the lab, take another 3 yrs for farmers to start its multipications.

Mentha Piperita :

This Type Of Mint Is Now A Thrust Area For India. During Past 8-10 Years, Indian Mentha Piperita Has Gained Grater Popularity In The World Market. But Unfortunately, Indian Could Not Able To Reach At Par With The American Varieties. And That Is The Reason, The Buyer Of Indian Mentha Piperita Are Using Indian Mentha Piperita Oil As A Blend With American Mentha Piperita
